The Open Game License was created by Wizards of the Coast for Dungeons & Dragons 3.0. Third party publishers were expected to create content that Wizards could or would not produce. Before Fourth Edition was released, games could also be released under the d20 System License which has since been revoked.
The SRD also contains content from Deities and Demigods, the Epic Level Handbook and the Expanded Psionics Handbook.
